The Coconut Farmers Association of Ghana (COFAG) in the Volta Region has successfully elected new regional and district executives to steer the affairs of the association for the next four years.
Leading the newly elected team is Togbe Dunenyo I, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Coconut Industry and Resorts Ltd, who will serve as Regional Chairman. He will be supported by his Vice, Yayra Attrimo, described by members as a hardworking and dedicated leader.
In his acceptance speech, Togbe Dunenyo I expressed gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him. He emphasized that coconut farming remains one of the most rewarding agricultural investments when properly managed. According to him, farmers who take the venture seriously stand a strong chance of achieving long-term financial stability.
However, he cautioned members against purchasing seedlings from roadside vendors, noting that some of such seedlings are of poor quality and may take up to ten years without yielding fruits. He advised farmers who cannot afford certified seedlings to exercise patience and wait for the distribution of free seedlings from the Coconut Federation.
To ensure accountability, he disclosed that a task force will soon be established to monitor and verify that beneficiaries of the government and federation’s free seedlings program actually plant them.
Togbe Dunenyo I further outlined the association’s vision to restore the Volta Region’s status as Ghana’s leading coconut-producing enclave. He also used the opportunity to invite Ghanaians in the diaspora to invest in coconut farming in the region, highlighting the availability of land and the sector’s potential to create employment opportunities for the youth.
Meanwhile, the Regional Chairman appealed to the government to expedite the release of seedlings to farmers. He explained that the ongoing rains in the Volta Region have prompted many farmers to clear large acres of land in anticipation of planting. Delays in distribution, he noted, are pushing farmers to resort to unapproved seedling sellers.
The newly elected executives are expected to drive growth, strengthen farmer support systems, and reposition coconut farming as a key pillar of economic development in the Volta Region.
