The Avatime community came together in high spirits on Saturday, September 6th, at Christ the King Parish in Accra, to launch the highly-anticipated Amu Festival. This year’s celebration promises to be an unforgettable experience, themed “Sustaining Avatime as Climate Resilient Community Through Mountain Brown Rice Production, Culture and Eco Tourism.” The event brought together chiefs, queen mothers, citizens, and friends of Avatime from far and near to officially launch and raise funds towards this year’s celebration.
The celebration of the mountain brown rice festival has been a centuries-old tradition, and its revival aims to restore the vibrant and full-scale cultivation of the crop, which serves as a vital source of income for farmers in the Avatime community. The Amu Festival, held annually in the Avatime traditional area, rotates among the seven Avatime communities, with Avatime-Fume hosting this year’s event. The festival’s primary objective is to promote development, education, eco-tourism, and unity within the Avatime Traditional Area, with this year’s focus on providing access to water for the people of Avatime-Fume. This initiative underscores the community’s commitment to addressing pressing needs while celebrating their rich cultural heritage.
The Avatime people take immense pride in their brown rice farming traditions, which are deeply rooted in the festival.
