Federation of Coconut Farmers Praises Prez Mahama’s Free Seedlings Project in Volta and Oti
Executives of the Federation of Coconut Farmers Association have concluded an inspection tour of ongoing coconut farms across the Volta and Oti Regions under the free coconut seedlings initiative introduced by President John Dramani Mahama.
The team expressed great satisfaction with the progress of work on the farms, describing the initiative as a major boost to coconut production in the two regions. They were particularly impressed with the level of commitment shown by local farmers who have embraced the government’s intervention.
Speaking after the tour, the Volta Regional Chairman of the Coconut Farmers Association, who also serves as Chairman of the Ho West Development Association and the Kpedze Youth for Development Association, Togbe Duneyo I (George Ofori), noted that coconut farming in Ghana historically began in the Volta Region before spreading to other parts of the country.
According to him, the region is now determined to reclaim its leading position in coconut production.
Togbe Duneyo I further announced plans for a major investment initiative that will attract investors from the diaspora and the business community to establish thousands of acres of coconut plantations, alongside coconut oil processing and resort facilities, to be known as the Volta Coconut Industries and Resort.
He described the project as one of the largest private agricultural investments expected in the Volta Region, adding that it is aimed at creating sustainable jobs for the youth and reducing unemployment in both the region and the country as a whole.
He appealed to traditional leaders and landowners to support the project by making land available and working closely with the promoters to ensure its successful implementation. He also urged the youth to cooperate fully with the team when the project officially begins next year.
Togbe Duneyo I expressed deep appreciation to Mr. Kwaku Boateng and his team for their continuous support toward the development of coconut farming in the Volta Region.
