Concerned Volta Youths Speak Out Against Honorary Doctorate for President Nana Addo

A group calling itself Concerned Volta Youths, on Monday, July 21, held a press conference to express their deep disappointment and concern regarding the decision by the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) to confer an honorary doctorate degree on President Nana Addo Dankwa.
According to the group, it is unthinkable and surprising that the governing council of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) could bypass the architect and initiators of the noble health institution and honor the president who has done little in the development of the school.
PRESS CONFERENCE STATEMENT
PRESS CONFERENCE BY CONCERNED VOLTA YOUTHS ON THE TOPIC ” UHAS SHOULD CANCEL THE HONORARY DOCTORATE CONFERMENT ON PRESIDENT NANA ADDO DANKWA”
Good morning distinguished ladies and gentlemen of the press herein gathered.
On behalf of concerned Volta Youths, I wish to welcome you all to this very important Press Conference and also to thank you all for your prompt responses to our call at a short notice.
You cannot be wrong for coming here because the purpose of this gathering addresses some critical concerns about the hypocritical nature of the governing council of University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).
Ladies and gentlemen, we are disappointed by the decision of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) to confer an honorary doctorate degree on President Nana Addo Dankwa the president of the republic
As we are all aware, the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), is the first public university established in the Volta Region of Ghana by the late Prof Mills(of blessed memory ) and HE John Dramani led government and it has so far become the only state university wholly dedicated to maintaining standards in the training of healthcare professionals in Ghana.
This university is dear to our hearts as people of the Volta Region of which we will remain grateful to those who gave birth to this viable and productive institution.
It is unthinkable and surprising that the governing council of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) could bypass the architect and initiators of this nobel health institution and honor the president which we see as do little in the development of the school such as road network in the hostel facilities in the school
It might surprise, that once a political party in this country describe and referred to the University as a “hatchery” so how can a hatchery not honor it’s initiators first but jump to conferer honor on our president who is the list in the line to warrant an honorary doctorate degree
Is it funny, according to the University Council their decision was necessitated by President Nana Addo’s exemplary leadership in making science education more accessible to Ghanaian
families through the Free SHS policy, the prioritisation of STEM Education in Ghana etc?
Surprisingly, the University Council appears to be unaware of how the Free SHS policy is poorly managed and as a result has created shambles in education sector which many educationalist and stakeholders are calling for review of the
Lack of infrastructure like classrooms turned into dormetaries, garages into classrooms, inadequate food supply, short contact hours etc.
Ladies and gentlemen, the University Council couldn’t recognize the very people who established the school not even in a day to acknowledge the chiefs and land owners.
We want the counsel to as a matter urgency publish list of development addition the president has added to the development of the school to warrant the the honoring
What has been his contribution to the lack of hostel facilities faced by to the students?
What has been his commitment towards the delayed payment of the landowners?
On issues of security, even his appointees in the region cannot even provide the students with security and as a result, there are constant cases of robbery putting the lives of the students in danger.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are calling on the University Council of University of Health and Allied Sciences, to come out and tell us the number STEM schools in The Volta Region.
This honorary doctorate degree proposal is purely partisan and should not be allowed to see the light of day.
This partisan conferment has the tendency to tarnish the image of UHAS’s reputation.
We are at this juncture calling on the Vice-Chancellor and the University Council, to as a matter of urgency withdraw the proposed conferment.
To His Excellency President Nana Addo, we equally called on to write back to the University Council stating he is not interested in the conferment.
This press conference would be followed by a demonstration should our call not be heeded to.
We thank you all for coming.
Long Live Ghana
Long Live Volta Region
Long Live UHAS
Signed:
